Rework
Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson
ISBN 978-0-09-192978-7
Rework is the outcome of the growth philosophy of the excellent 37 Signals company, or should we say the un-growth philosophy. 37 Signals has grown through it's ability to fly in the face of established start-up logic, no VC, no major corporate infrastructure, geographically dispersed staff, no major PR, just good products that work, clever people and a refreshing attitude to the world.
The book shows how they have debunked established wisdom, and whilst not every chapter makes sense for new businesses in the new economy, many hit the spot.
Look at some of the chapters:
Start a business not a start up
Throw less at the problem
Good enough is fine
Out-teach your competition
Hire when it hurts
Send people home at 5
Get the idea? Rework gives sound advice to those of us who work ridiculous hours, who think success is judged by numbers of staff or shiny offices. We particularly like the sections on building half a product, not a half-assed product, and selling your by-products.
This is an easy read and is thought provoking. We like this book, and like 37 Signals - give it a read.
